Theo quan niệm đạo đức phong kiến, khi cha mất thì người anh cả thay cha gánh vác việc nhà, quyết định những việc quan trọng và trông nom, dạy bảo các em. Câu dùng để nói về quyền và trách nhiệm của anh cả trong gia đình theo trật tự cũ.
